Just a thought about something viral.

Hi,
This post is about something that has taken a lot of public attention and interest in the last few days. A teenage girl was molested by a group of males for half an hour in the streets of Guwahati. Now almost everyone knows the details and so on and they are all truly truly despicable. There is no rationale whatsoever for the girl to be deserving the atrocities committed towards her. And I am not going to glorify the sorry sorry fools who enacted out this heinous crime.

Facebook has championed the cause of the girl and the public outrage has jolted the police into action and has resulted in a number of arrests. Which is a very good thing, for these criminals must be tried for the full extent of their crimes. There is a video on youtube which details the plight of the girl which set the social media ball rolling. People have been posting photographs on their walls/timelines of those who were involved in the act, and surely that has helped a lot. A lot easier to identify someone when there are millions searching.

However, there is something that has caught my eye. I didn't see the video on youtube and neither do I want to, since there can be absolutely no good in watching the clip. The video has been used to identify the criminals and that is the only good that comes out of it.

Two photographs however are still bothering me.

I don't think there is any need to share any photograph which shows the girl being abused by the victims. You want to abuse the criminals, do that, abuse the crap out of them but do not glorify their act by sharing the pic of the helpless girl in their clutches. She has been through enough, she does not need to relive those moments over and over, and she just might wind up doing so at the rate at which people are sharing those pics. Nobody needs to see that anymore, nobody should see her in that indecent state.

The second pic is that of one of the culprits, and it shows him wearing a cap and standing next to his car, maybe taken from his Facebook page itself. This man was on the run and has been arrested in Orissa. The pic has a message which contains a fair amount of suppressed anger and sarcasm, but you are calling this man a rapist. Yet the picture you share of him shows him to be enjoying life, with his cap set at a jaunty angle, next to a car. In my mind it send the wrong message and is misleading. The only pic that should be shared is him in his jail cell while serving his sentence. No other pic will do justice. There should be no glorifying his evil deed by showing him in various modes of enjoying life. The widespread talk about the incident should not give those hungry for attention yet another outlet for their impotence. The propaganda should serve to remind everyone that the strictest measures are in place for those who do not value the decency of human dignity, not to glorify their acts and set precedents for others. They are worse than animals and should be treated such.
